219. NSW Mixed Ultimate Championships

I was getting FOMO about not playing Regionals, so a week before the tournament I asked Brendan if I could play with his team. There were a lot of people I’d never met, but I was looking forward to playing with Brendan again, and also Craigie and Aleksie, who I’d played against heaps, but never with.

We were seeded last, so I was in it for the fun rather than hope of any kind of glory. My goal was to help bring home a win. It was pretty fast coming, as we beat VLS Soda 7-4 in the first game. They went up 4-2, but with the really strong wind we found a defence that worked consistently, and our throwers were a bit stronger and more consistent than theirs.

We got destroyed by the other teams in the pool, then had a pre-quarter to decide if we played the 9-16 quarters or the 17-24 quarters. It was against MC DUFF Vamos. They weren’t that strong, but went up 9-1 on us before we again worked out how to play defence, and got back to 9-7 before they closed it out 10-7.

On Sunday we lost a couple of games pretty decisively to end up in the last place playoff against a Pie Wagon team. We were up 9-7 at cap, but it went to universe. There were a few turns in the last point, at least one in our end zone, but we took it eventually. The team was super happy, and I threw the winning goal which was nice.

I was generally happy with how I played, in pretty tough conditions. I threw a lot of hucks, and the success rate was great considering the high level of risk I was accepting. Cutting was hard, but that’s what you get from not training for ages.
