Frisbee Tournaments248. Australian Ultimate Championships Div IIDate: 15/ 04/ 2023 - 17/ 04/ 2023Location: Bendigo, Australia Team name: Stout Finishing postion: 3/26 The weekend before I did a 600km audax in Wangaratta, so I spent the week in between working from a caravan park in Maiden Gully, about 10km from Bendigo. It was a good week. Friday I met up with Glenn and Yoann for a couple of beers before everyone else arrived. We had a pool of six, with four games on Saturday and one on Sunday. We started at 8:30am every morning. Our first game was against Sublime who were not shit but we beat them handily. Ironbark were the top of our pool and our second game, and we beat them in universe. They were missing a key player from Regionals where they had beaten us, but also we were playing relatively solid. The next two games for day 1 were pretty straightforward. It was pretty crap weather, raining all day, and I started feeling unwell Saturday night at dinner. I felt horrible and it sucked. I went home with a fever and slept in through the first game on Sunday. This was against Outbreak who had proven to be a threat. Apparently the game was played on a very muddy field. We won in universe after being down by 2 at time cap. Exciting stuff, but I wasn't there to see it. I played the rest of the games. Denyer arrived Sunday afternoon as well, and our pre-quarter against Bench 2 wasn't too difficult. Topping the pool was good as the other cross overs were much tougher. The quarter against Melbourne Carnage was another tough one. There was a bit of ebb and flow, with multiple breaks each way. They tried to get under our skin, but it didn't really work, and the universe point win was that little bit sweeter because they were salty about it. Dinner on Sunday was at a very cool Indian restaurant where we all ate way too much spicy food. It was great though. The semi Monday morning was against Hot Chilly, the div 1 team who had been knocked out. Our best effort scored 5 points which was the most any team had gotten against them. That left us a bronze medal playoff against Outbreak again. This time they had no answer to our 2-3-2 and we won 15-6. It was emotional. I had to ride my bike 10km back to town, and absolutely smashed it, fueled by beer and bronze medal. It was a great weekend. Our small team of 16 oldies worked well together, and even with all the injuries, everyone was still standing at the end. We played a lot of very effective zone throughout the weekend, even in still conditions, and our offence was creative but still fairly solid. Monday night a few of us stayed in Bendigo for a fancy dinner and had a big one, then I caught the train home on Tuesday night. |
